In Memory of You

Taken before you had a chance to live
And learn life’s many secrets.
The secrets that are only revealed once you’ve laughed canyons into cheeks
And stressed canals into foreheads—
Your skin cracked with wisdom.
You were robbed of this . . .
You’re future.
And though we’re shaken, our lost gnawing at our souls like an unrelenting itch,
Knowing you’ve found peace in God, keeps us from aching, breaking down—
Unraveling stitch by stitch.
You’re free now.
Free of the utter coldness of this world and its constant blizzard.
Our news littered with headlines that shiver and weep nonstop because,
Unfortunately,
Evil
Does not.
Sleep.
But today we’re not here to speak of this evil.
We’re here to honor you—
To remember you— brother, son, cousin, nephew
Pray for us.
Watch over us.
And rest in peace.
